You! Out of the Gene Pool!

Am I a horrible person for thinking it might not be a bad thing if kids doing this were removed from the gene pool?

The Choking Game

I'm torn on that one.

How many of us would have been removed from the gene pool from the dangerous stupid things we did growing up? Did you ever drive too fast? Drive after too many drinks? Smoke "something"? Drink too many drinks? ETC?

Do you remember when you thought NOTHING would kill you? Do you remember when you thought kids just don't die? I am sure my 16 year old son thought the same thing. I am sure when he saw the choking game on CSI the night before, he thought he could do it RIGHT. I know he would never have wanted his 11 year old brother to find him hanging. I know he would never have wanted his 15 year old brother to also see him hanging and cut him down. I know the little sister he sat by for almost 11 weeks while she was in ICU and read to he never would have wanted to hurt with the depth of pain. I know the business owners who thought he was so smart and wanted to make him manager of their store would never have imagined that 15 minutes after they called him to come in we'd find him dead. He was a "good kid". He would have never tried drugs. He loved life - loved his 9 siblings - and most of all loved God. He had compassion for people. But, he learned of a game - a game he lost. We are at almost a year since his death, and it's still very hard. This game is dangerous, foolish, and mostly likely WILL cause death. But we have all done foolish things, even as wise adults! Please inform your viewers. You don't want their kids or siblings to try this deadly game.

loni, I am so sorry for your loss. I doubt Slacker meant any offense, I think it is just so frustrating hearing about kids doing things that we as adults so clearly realize are dangerous and deadly. Have I done stupid things? You bet. I am grateful to be alive, actually. And I started early on my daughter hoping she won't make the same mistakes I have, because she may not be so lucky. This latest "game" sounds so innocent to kids because it DOESN'T involve alchohol or drugs - and you're right, kids don't comprehend the possibility of dying young. That is what makes it so scary.

Slacker - you're not a horrible person at all, but stupid as it sounds to us as adults - to kids it's a quick "natural" high. It's up to us adults to try to educate them...

This is insane? I didn't think teenagers were really that stupid. No offense to Loni, but if you can't figure out that choking yourself could kill you, maybe we do need to rethink the gene pool. HOW can teenagers this this is ok?

Sounds like several Darwin Awards in the making.

I get the pain, and I get the anger involved that parents like Loni feel; I get that all kids think they're invincible. It's doing stupid things like that (among many of the stupid things I've done that could and should have killed me) that make one eligible for a Darwin Award, and worthy of being exemplified in this post.

gawblimeyman - I must have missed out, I don't remeber doing anything taht completely dangerous. heh.

Miss Tude - Very true.

Marie - yeah totally crazy, I don't get it.

Loni - I totally feel for parents who have lost their children. I guess I can't and probably never will understand what posesses anyone, adult or child, to think that doing something that puts you at the braink of death can be worth it.

Anisa - Yeah it is sad. As I said, I fail to understand it.

Sub Girl - Me either.

Dasi - I guess I don't get it at all, even as a kid I recognized soem thigns were stupidly dangerous. Choking was always something you didn't want to happen. Want a quick natural high, get two fo thsoe super huge pixy sticks and have at em, that'll even last longer. It's sad that kids are taht low that they even think to NEED a high.

Pieces - Well ti doesn't seem to be involuntary, all the epople in volved bring it on themselves... wierd.

Leesa - yah, very!

Esther - I have that same question. How does soemone get to the point, where in order to feel good, they think they need to almost kill themself?

OzzyC - Darwin Award is exactly my take on this.
